Adopting A Dog From TDBCR

Adopting a dog is a lifetime committment. Border collies can live for 15 years or more, and like all dynamic individuals they come with quirks, habits and changing needs. Before you welcome a living, breathing family member into your life, you must be prepared to accept that your life - and your lifestyle - can be significantly, and permanently changed by your decision.

Your dog depends on nobody but you. He has nowhere else to turn if you cannot or will not meet his basic needs for care. This is a big responsibility, and to ensure that are adopters are prepared for this challenge we are going to ask you some questions about your lifestyle, your needs, your expectations and your limitations. We want to know that our rescue dog is going to be happy and well cared for in his new home, and that you are going to be happy with the decision you've made. The only way to do this is by "interviewing" you to find out as much as we can. There is no other way to successfully play matchmaker.

PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU APPLY

A Successful Adoption Process will encompass the following steps:

We will ask you to fill out an application form when you contact us. This form is not available on the website; you will have to ask us to send you one.

We will open a dialogue with you based on your responses. We will talk about your home, your family, your experience with herding dogs and the kind of life and care you can offer a rescued dog.

The adoption coordinator will put you in touch with the volunteer family fostering the dog you are interested in so you can have further dialogue that will help you both decide if the dog might be right for you.

If a potential match is in the works, we will come visit your home - we can advise you on modifications that could make the adoption more successful, such as fencing and other things you may not have thought about.

We will then invite you to come meet the dog in question. We'll see if there is chemistry between you and the dog. Remember - we are looking for a perfect match.

We will then ask you to think about your decision for a couple more days, and to provide you an opportunity to make any modifications necessary to accomodate your new dog.

You can then pick up your new companion and start a beautiful journey together!

You MUST be 19 years of age or older to apply for one of our dogs.

We DO NOT SHIP our dogs. You must be able to visit the dog at least once before an adoption.

We DO NOT HAVE A SHELTER or similar facility. You cannot come "visit all the dogs" and make a decision about which one you like. Applications are accepted on a per dog basis.

We DO NOT keep a waitlist. We are unable to keep your application on file or remember what kind of dog you are looking for. Please keep checking the website for a match for you.

If a dog is listed as PENDING, that dog has a strong candidate for adoption already and is not available to you. Please consider a different dog in need.

If a dog is listed as NOT YET AVAILABLE please DO NOT apply for that dog - he is still being evaluated, and we cannot yet determine what his needs criteria are.

ALL dogs are SPAYED/NEUTERED, vaccinated appropriate to their age, microchipped and examined by a veterinarian prior to adoption.

The adoption fee includes all of these procedures as well as covering fees for other common problems like worms, fleas, hot spots, allergies, wounds and minor injuries as well as grooming.

Frequently we have large vet bills, so any excess monies are held to cover those contingencies.
